At Homeschool History Outsourced, we believe history is best learned through reading, discussion, and writing, not memorizing facts for a test.
Each week, students are assigned readings along with guided questions to help them engage with the material. Students also receive a central Socratic discussion question that they research in advance and come prepared to discuss in class. This preparation allows discussions to be thoughtful, evidence-based, and student-driven rather than surface-level.
Writing is a major component of most classes and one of the ways Homeschool History Outsourced stands apart. Students complete a series of in-depth writing assignments that are broken down into a manageable, step-by-step process. Rather than being overwhelmed by a large paper all at once, students learn how to move through each stage with clarity and confidence.
Students are taught how to:
• locate and evaluate reliable sources
• write a proper bibliography
• use Chicago-style citations
• create a clear and effective outline
• draft a rough draft and revise it
• produce a polished final draft
• develop and defend a strong thesis statement
This process is intentionally repeatable. Once students learn it, they can apply it again and again in future classes and across subjects. The goal is to equip students with practical academic writing skills that will serve them well long after the class ends.
Class discussions are conducted in a Socratic format that encourages respectful debate, critical thinking, and clear communication. Students learn that differing viewpoints are welcome when supported by historical evidence. Over time, students gain confidence in expressing ideas both verbally and in writing.
Our philosophy is simple: challenge students, support them, and teach skills that actually transfer. History becomes the framework through which students learn how to think, write, and engage thoughtfully with the world.
If this approach sounds like a good fit for your student, the next step is exploring current class offerings.
